Who may join as a PhD candidateeee?

When you consider joining GO-GN as a PhD researcher, first check out our GO-GN PhD trajectory.

To start with your actual PhD research project, you need:

  1. an approved research proposal for your project
  2. a promoter to guide you
  3. affiliation with a PhD degree awarding university

The procedure to join GO-GN as a PhD candidate depends on whether you have none, one, two or all three of the above conditions fulfilled. Check which of the descriptions below matches your situation.

What is your present situation?

1. I want to develop an OER research outline

You don´t have a research outline yet, but are investigating your options.

What to do? Check out the GO-GN OER research themes and the guidelines on research outlines. You are now ready to start your GO-GN Intake. Develop your research outline and send it in for a first assessment by one of the GO-GN Experts. Once your research outline is approved, you apply as a GO-GN PhD candidate.

2. I already developed an OER research outline, and am now looking for a PhD studentship/position

You are not affiliated to a university yet, but you do have an outline of a PhD research project on OER that meets the GO-GN requirements. Your immediate reason to join GO-GN is to look for a PhD awarding university and a promoter.

What to do? You submit your research outline for a first assessment by one of the GO-GN Experts, and upon approval you apply as a GO-GN PhD candidate. You may already have a look at the list of available promoters and degree awarding partner universities.

3. I developed an OER research outline, but my university cannot award degrees

You are affiliated to a university, but your university cannot award a PhD degree in OER. Your immediate reason to join GO-GN is to look for a promoter to guide you in your research project, and for a university that in time will be able to award you your PhD degree. You may carry out (a large part of) your research project within your own university, but under the supervision of the (external) promoter.

What to do? You submit your research outline for a first assessment by one of the GO-GN Experts. Upon approval you apply as a GO-GN PhD candidate, and your university may join as a GO-GN Partner institution. You may already have a look at the list of available promoters.

4. My university can award PhD degrees, but I need a promoter specifically on OER

You are already affiliated to a PhD awarding university, you have an outline of a PhD research project on OER, but you don't have a promoter yet. Your immediate reason to join GO-GN is to look for a promoter.

What to do? You apply as a GO-GN PhD candidate, and your university joins as a GO-GN Partner institution.

5. I already have an OER research proposal, a promoter, and PhD studentship/position

You are already affiliated to a PhD awarding university and you already have a promoter with whom you agreed on the topic of your research. Your reason to participate in GO-GN is to be part of a community with similar interests and to share resources, contacts, best practices, etc.

What to do? You apply as a GO-GN PhD candidate, your (co)promoter(s) may join as GO-GN Experts, and your university may join as a GO-GN Partner institution.
