CELSTEC stands for Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies. CELSTEC is a renowned research institute in the field of Learning Sciences (also known as Educational Sciences) and Technology Enhanced Learning.

• Best of the Netherlands:
  In the last Assessment of research quality of pedagogics and educational sciences, CELSTEC received the highest score of all research groups in the Netherlands. Read the news item on the report (in Dutch).

  In 2009 the results of an analysis of international publications were published, which showed that CELSTEC is worldwide thé authoritative research institute in the field of educational design.

International context

CELSTEC collaborates with institutions such as the

• Learning Systems Institute (LSI: Florida State University, VS)
• Knowledge Media Research Center (KMRC: Universität Tübingen, Duitsland)
• Scientific network of the Universiteit Leuven (theme 'developing critical and flexible thinking', financed by the Vlaams Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek)

LSI and CELSTEC have every month a joint online colloquium and the two institutions exchange staff members. Distinguished researchers from abroad regularly visit CELSTEC for a period of time in order to collaborate with CELSTEC-researchers.

Professional supervision by experts

When you do your PhD at CELSTEC, you are not left on your own. Your research will be supervised by one of the professors of CELSTEC. (Meet the professors of CELSTEC.) In many cases, a second experienced researcher will be appointed to act as your daily supervisor. This daily supervisor can be a member of CELSTEC-staff but also an experienced researcher from another institution.

Education and training

A PhD candidate is a research student. As external PhD you are offered many of the same training sessions and workshops as the 'regular' PhD candidates at CELSTEC. For example the training Scientific writing in English or the workshop Scientific publishing. Apart from this we offer you the opportunity to take part in the workshops and training sessions that ICO (interuniversitary centre for educational research) organises for PhD candidates.
